Early Work and Tile Projects
This year, we started planting season a little differently, tackling tile work first. On March 1, we finished up the big tile project at Matt’s and the north end of REK, at least as much as we could. A hard freeze had pushed the frost line down 15 inches, leaving big chunks of frozen dirt on top. We used the snowblade to close up trenches, and a few weeks later, Tom came through with the field cultivator to smooth things out.
Soybeans First
We planted our first soybeans on April 12, and you couldn’t have asked for better conditions. Brian’s 15-inch row planter gave us a good stand for moisture and weed control, while Dave and Tom kept things moving, working ground and loading beans. Laura and Bill even showed up one day to lend a hand — or at least to say they did.
We finished up soybean planting by April 14, working late into the evening. Lisa kept everyone well-fed, and Ann and Noah pitched in on Friday. Out at Marie’s, David was busy clearing trees from the ditch. It’s always surprising how much those trees can grow in just a couple of years.
Sweet Corn and Family Involvement
On April 18, Tom put in 16 rows of sweet corn. If the bugs leave us alone, we might add a few more rows at Woodford and maybe some at Matt’s, too.
Corn Planting Progress
FS had to hold off on spraying for a while because of the wind, but once things settled down, we got rolling on corn. Even though it’s still early, the soils have been in great shape. The ground we ripped last fall turned out mellow—almost too dry in places.
We did have a few small repairs along the way—a wheel bushing here, a broken shank there, and some bearings—but all in all, things have gone pretty smoothly. By Easter weekend, we had all the soybeans in and about 40% of the corn planted. Or as Dad liked to say, we were ‘finished the first time.’
Looking Ahead
Rain has been in the forecast, but most of the storms have passed us by. We did get a steady shower on Friday that made things too wet to plant, so we took a break until after Easter.
All in all, it’s been a blessed start to the season, with family pitching in, smooth days in the field, and just a few minor hiccups. Wishing everyone a safe and healthy spring, and a Happy Easter.
